6 ways to add some fizz to life
11 January 2022
Are you starting your New Year with less fizz than a two-day-old open bottle of pop, while your friends are fizzing on like the lid’s just come off? Here are 6 things in your control to make life that little bit better.
You hear it every year… ‘New year, new me’, or ‘Oh it’s new year, I’m going to make some massive changes.’ The thing is, when we try to make such massive changes, we can end up putting so much pressure on ourselves that we fast become so overwhelmed that nothing happens.
Sure, the start of a new year is a great time to set new intentions and goals to make positive changes in your life. But so is every day. It doesn’t need to just happen at New Year.
Some small changes you can make and take control of on any day to make life even just a little better and exciting are:
1. Look after your health. This is basic, right? But how often do we bypass eating well for convenience? Just last night I opted for a minted kofta kebab to be delivered because I was ‘too tired to cook’…So number 1 – eat well. Next up is moving more. What exercise can you do that you like (or learn to like, or better still learn to love)? I know, I love staying in my warm bed too. I use Mel Robbins’ 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 countdown and haul my butt out of bed. I can’t say I love every minute of it, but when it’s done, it’s done. Then sort your sleeping habits. Easier said than done, eh? I like watching that one next episode too. But I also know how much more productive I am when I’ve had a decent sleep. Look after yourself. You only get one you, and these small habit changes make you feel so much better. When you start feeling better, you boost your self-esteem.
2. Read more of whatever you like. Reading expands our minds in many ways. Whether we’re reading topics to help our development, travel guides to plan our holidays or some exciting fiction where you can lose yourself as the plot unfolds around you, taking you with it through the twists and turns.
3. Go on a weekly date. And no, I don’t just mean a ‘romantic’ date. Whether it’s a date with your partner, your child/ren, your parent/s, your friend/s – whether it’s a pizza on a Wednesday evening, or a walk through the park on a weekend. When you spend time with people you care about doing something fun or interesting, your relationships with those people get closer and stronger and make you feel better.
4. Know your priorities and stick to them. It’s easy to lose sight of your priorities when there’s lots to do and get on with. But the key to making positive changes to is to be aware of your priorities and keep them in sight when you’re making decisions.
5. Do something you’ve never done before. Is there something you’ve always wanted to do but never got round to it or had the guts to give it a go? Maybe there’s somewhere you want to visit that you’ve never been to before? Whether it’s something you’ve thought about for years, or something you’ve spontaneously come up with that day, doing something new will bring added excitement to your life and help you grow.
6. Spice up your work life. If you’re feeling bored, or unchallenged at work there are lots of things you can do change that. We spend so much of our lives working, it’s important we do what we can to enjoy it and excel at the same time. Look to expand your efforts and growth each day doing things that could be as simple as taking on a task that perhaps is not as desirable as others. Or volunteer for a new project. Have a chat with your manager in your 1:1s about the different things you can do to help yourself develop and grow. Find a mentor you admire and learn what they do to support their own growth.
There are so many little things we can do to start living our best lives, and they’re all totally within our gift to get cracking on.
With these small changes you’ll soon be feeling more fizz than flat. Happy New Year!
