Welcome

Here you'll find my infrequent musings and reflections on all things that impact our beliefs and potential.

Overcoming adversity when it comes knocking (and it will)

7 April 2022

I’m pretty certain no one gets through life unscathed by some kind of adversity. And the thing about adversity is it poses us challenges. So, the question is, how do you deal with challenges?

As with any challenge, there are ways and means to help make the road to success that bit smoother.

Learning how best for you to respond to challenges successfully can really enhance your positive attributes which can then be drawn on again for any future challenges.

It’s worth remembering that even the most successful people have dealt with enormous adversity in their lives.

Try these techniques to overcome adversity and live a life you love:

  • 1.Acceptance. Adversity is everywhere and there’s no place to hide. Sometimes bad things happen, and we can’t avoid it. Accepting the situation is the first step to finding a way through it. Adversity is a part of life. Tell yourself that you’ll get through it and the situation will get back to normal.
  • 2. Focus on solutions. The first and natural thing we do when faced with adversity is…worry. All this does is lowers our ability to change the situation, without actually solving anything. When things aren’t going well, take it as a sign to get busy. By that I mean make a plan. What can you do right now to make a positive change within this situation?
  • 3.Focus on the present. It’s easy to start looking into the future and worrying about the worst possible outcome while beating yourself up about the current challenge. Sure maybe you’ve made a mistake or misjudged what’s going on, but worrying about the future isn’t going to change what is happening right now. Focus on the present and look for those solutions.
  • 4. Set a goal. What outcome would you like to happen? Set a goal to make that outcome happen as quickly as possible. In our rush to just try and make things better, we don’t look at what outcome we’d like to see. Take a bit of time to figure this out, and maybe there’s a solution to prevent a repeat occurrence.
  • 5. Relax. Stress and worry don’t contribute to a positive outcome. Learning to relax in stressful situations is a skill that takes time to develop, but when you do it allows you to both feel more comfortable and perform at your best. Too much stress is unhealthy and counterproductive. Keep working your plan and remember to breathe.
  • 6. Ask for and accept help. There are many people in our individual worlds who would be happy to help, or who know someone who might be able to. Try not to be too shy, proud, or embarrassed to ask for help. You’d be willing to help the people in your life, so give them the same opportunity. There’s no reason to struggle alone.
  • 7. Focus on improvement. Rather than consuming yourself with the thought of getting the adversity completely out of your life, focus on making regular progress in the right direction. Even if the situation hasn’t been completely resolved you can be happy about your progress. The tiniest of steps is all progress.

When faced with adversity, keep your focus on finding solutions and you’ll deal with the adversity with skill. Having a goal and plan are key components of bringing your life back on course. Worry, stress, and fear will only lower your effectiveness and limit your ability to alter the situation.

Remember that achieving bigger goals and living a more fulfilling life require us to deal with adversity effectively. Confront it head on. Your ability to deal with adversity grows with experience.
