Welcome

Here you'll find my infrequent musings and reflections on all things that impact our beliefs and potential.

Stop talking and start doing

4 May 2022

How many times have you ‘meant’ to do something? Maybe you intended to do a certain job, live in a certain area, or get involved in certain things. And how many times has life just got in the way and held you back?

How many of you still wish you could do some of those things you thought about all that time ago? Maybe you find yourself saying “I’ve always wanted to…”

What does it take to follow though with your intentions? To stop talking and start doing?

These strategies can help you take action and reach your dreams:

1. Identify your top three dreams at the time. Putting a smaller limit on what you want to do helps to avoid overwhelm and therefore helps you succeed. Pick those most important to you and make them your key goals. You can always add more later.

2. Stay focused on those goals and don’t allow anything to get in the way of accomplishing them. It’s easy to be distracted, but when you focus, you’ll keep those goals on your mind every single day. You might have heard people saying they ‘eat, sleep and drink’ it when they’re passionate about something, well, this needs to be you with your goals.

3. Break each goal up into chunks. When we divide our goals into smaller more achievable goals, we feel success sooner as we hit each one. This helps drive us on to keep going a step at a time. For example, if a goal is to set up a business, what are the aspects you need to do to set it up? Your mini-goals could be identifying your product, market research, identifying competitors, your marketing plan etc.

4. Commit to doing something that gets you closer to your goals every single day. For example, rather than spend three hours each evening scrolling on your phone, spend two of those hours working towards a mini-goal.

5. Be flexible. If focusing on three dreams is too distracting, change it down and choose just one at a time until each one is achieved. Also, be willing to switch to another mini-goal if you get stuck. Often this simple act is enough to unstick our mind.

6. Be mindful of the words you use. Instead of saying you “always wanted to do” something, say what the things are that you’ve done recently that moves you closer to your dream. This keeps your intentions alive to you and others and aligns talk and action with your goals.

It feels so good when we’re actively focusing on our dreams and doing what we can to achieve them.

The power to stop talking and start doing is all yours. You can live the life you want and achieve today. It all starts with one step. With one decision. What will yours be?
