Welcome

Here you'll find my infrequent musings and reflections on all things that impact our beliefs and potential.

Tips to develop your strengths

1 February 2022

No matter who you are in this world, every single person has unique strengths and talents. But not every single person has developed them.

Some haven’t even discovered them yet. Some might have had their strengths brought to their attention but not feel confident enough to do anything with them yet. Some people’s self-esteem might have taken a big knock that they actually believe they have no talents at all.

If this is you, I promise you, you do. You’ve just not untapped them yet. But they’re there and you can make a difference.

There are some simple things you can do to identify your strengths and develop them to their full potential. Grab yourself a cuppa, a pen and paper and have a read through the following points, noting down how you’re doing for each one.

  • 1. Research. What do you think you’re good at? Maybe you think you’re strong in a particular are, but aren’t 100%. Look into the things that pique your interest. What do you think you might be good at? What resources are available to help you develop those strengths more? Is there a webinar you can join? An online course? Is there a course your work can send you on? Skills you can learn from a mentor? What’s it going to take for you to commit to build on those strengths?
  • 2.Patience. Not one of my strong points – I like to think I’ll be good at something immediately… Sadly, it’s a lesson I’ve learnt the hard way that developing my strengths doesn’t happen overnight. What does help is being consistent and taking things step by step. This is what will help you to grow and reap benefits. Things may take a while, but you’ll learn a whole load of good stuff along the way. Sometimes the lessons will feel like failures – and that’s where the biggest lessons happen. Keep going. Stay patient. Celebrate the steps – no matter how small.
  • 3.Set goals. Goals give us clear things to work towards. Note down what you want to do, and when by. What are the smaller steps you need to do to achieve your goal? Be realistic and review them often, and again, celebrate each step you achieve. Pop them on post-its and stick them across the house to keep your goals in sight, help you stay motivated and on track.
  • 4. Believe in yourself. This can be so hard, but it’s also the key to growth. Confidence can be one of your greatest strengths and assets. If you truly believe you can, you’ve won the biggest half of the battle.å

Final thoughts

Growth can be daunting and overwhelming at times. YES, it takes some work. But knowing your strengths and building on them them more gives you so much to work with.

Keep the big picture in sight and think of what you can achieve by strengthening your strengths and believing you can accomplish what you set your mind to. The world’s your lobster.
